Melanin pigment is located in a very small granule known as the melanosome formed in the melanocyte. The amount of melanin pigment that is found in the skin determines the skin color, from pale to brown to black.

Melanocytes of dark-skinned individuals produce larger quantities of melanin and the melanosomes are individually dispersed within the melanocytes. Dark black skin has the largest number of melanosomes with the same amount of melanocytes.

The size of the melanosomes as well as their activity determines the distribution pattern, which in turn determines the degree of pigmentation.

In Asians, the melanosomes are distributed as a mixture of single and complex forms of melanosomes. In black skin, the melanosomes are larger, heavily pigmented, and singly distributed in keratinocytes. In white skin the melanosomes are smaller containing less melanin, and distributed in groups.

Melanosomes in healthy blacks and in deeply tanned whites may be dispersed singularly throughout the epidermis.
