Bay Harbour Med Spa (centrally located between Miami, Aventura, Sunny Isles and Miami Beach) has over 35 years  of experience  in treating ethnic skin, particularly African-American skin. We are one of the few med spas in South Florida professionally trained to treat black skin. Before we get into the laser treatments, it’s important that we cover some useful facts and information about how ethnic skin differs from Anglo skin.

One has to be very careful not to use harsh products and or treatments on dark and black skin as they can destroy the melanin (pigment of the skin), which my cause hyperpigmentation. It is also very important to understand that black skin contrary to popular belief, needs to be protected from the UVA’s harmful sun rays. It is a misconception to believe that just because your skin is dark you do not need to protect it from the ultra violet rays. Sun block or zinc should be a part of your daily routine. In fact, over the last several years, there has been a steady rise in skin cancer in the African-American community.

Laser hair removal for black skin goes beyond just having you lay on on the bed, and us gliding the hand-piece on the area you’d like to have treated for unwanted hair. We recognize that, in fact, given our vast experience, we treat black skin for the following conditions (if they are not overtly obvious, we look for the following signs):

  • Are you a female that is hiding her face under a ton of make -up to cover up the excessive facial hair growth?
  • Do you have painful or infected ingrowns? (This is a very big problem for women and men alike, in the African-American community)!
  • Are you a woman, overweight and have painful mestrual cycles? (You may have PCOS which is treatable).

Bay Harbour Med Spa  recognizes the fact that special precaution needs to be taken when treating black skin with laser hair which is why we offer the only laser technology approved by the FDA to treat dark or ethnic skin. Here is some useful information about the CoolGlide ™  technology and what you need to know about our laser hair removal treatments:

How does laser hair removal for black skin work?

We utilize the CoolGlide ™ technology, the only laser technology approved by the FDA to treat black skin. The tip of the hand-piece is cool, as we glide the hand-piece over the treated area, it immediately cools  the affected area, minimizing most pain associated with laser  treatments. The final result after multiple treatments is that the  follicles will be weakened by the laser beam, rendering them unable to support the hair.

How many laser hair remvoal treatments will I need?

You will need approximately 12 treatments spaced out over 4 to 6 weeks. It is a common misconception and unethical practice in the laser hair removal industry to sell potential clients the common fallacy that they would only require 4 to 6 treatments. If you’re told this, ask for their guarantee policies, if the laser establishment requires touch up fees, run to the nearest exit! You will not need to wait for regrowth of hair to come in for laser treatments.

Is there pre and  post-treatment care I need to follow?

Yes! It’s important that you NOT pluck, tweeze, use depilatories or wax any regrowth following your laser treatments. You may continue to shave the areas of treatment, but, never, ever use the other methods mentioned, because the follicles must be destroyed at their roots, if you use the above methods you, the laser beam won’t have a root to weaken the hair follicle. If you have any more questions about the process, we’ll be happy to cover this information during your initial free consultation. When coming in for your initial treatment, all you need to do is shave the area you’re having treated. We do not have to see hair presence.

I’d like to come in for a consultation, is there a fee?

Absolutely not! Please call to schedule a FREEconsultation. We are not a walk-in establishment, but we will try to accommodate you for the soonest consultation appointment that there is. If you find that we’ve not covered a question you may have relating to laser hair removal, please call us at: 305-864-8824.
